چکیده

The relationship between wheat flour in the diet and the development of symptoms in children with coeliac disease observed by Dicke (1950) has been established. Subsequent investigations indicated that the injurious factor occurs principally in the gliadin ifraction (van de Kamer, Weijers and Dicke, 1953). Weijers and van de Kamer (1955) used gliadin in a method of testing wheat sensitivity hoping that the test would be helpful in the diagnosis of coeliac disease. In order to determine the value of this gliadin tolerance test, it was performed on a series of children with coeliac disease and on controls. The children with coeliac disease were patients of Dr. Wilfrid Sheldon and attended his clinic regularly. The diagnostic criteria used were those given by May (in Garrod, Batten and Thursfield, 1947). The diagnosis was confirmed by a favourable response to a diet free of wheat and rye gluten. The beneficial effect of the diet is manifested by an improvement in appetite and temperament, disappearance of steatorrhoea and an increase in growth. Growth is carefully followed by height and weight charts (Sheldon and Lawson, 1952).

Is the sugar intestinal permeability test a reliable investigation for coeliac disease screening?

BACKGROUND The lactulose/mannitol (L/M) intestinal permeability test is a simple, non-invasive screening test for coeliac disease. The reliability of the L/M test has so far only been tested in selected groups of patients with coeliac disease. AIM To evaluate the reliability of the L/M test in a group of patients with coeliac disease who had been diagnosed during mass serological screening of...

Intestinal permeability in patients with coeliac disease and relatives of patients with coeliac disease.

The functional integrity of the small bowel is impaired in coeliac disease. Intestinal permeability, as measured by the sugar absorption test probably reflects this phenomenon. In the sugar absorption test a solution of lactulose and mannitol was given to the fasting patient and the lactulose/mannitol ratio measured in urine collected over a period of five hours. The sugar absorption test was p...

Salivary IgA antigliadin antibody as a marker for coeliac disease.

In recent years, serum antibodies to gliadin (AGA) have been reported to be useful markers of coeliac disease. IgA AGA have also been found in intestinal secretions and saliva in coeliac disease and may offer a convenient, non-invasive screening test. In order to test this hypothesis, salivary and serum AGA were measured in children with coeliac disease proved by biopsy and compared with severa...
